The mission of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre is to provide scientific-technical support to the European Union's policies for the protection and sustainable development of the environment.

 

The centre has been in charge of EU forest monitoring policies and has developed and implemented European information systems such as

 

(a) the European Forest Data Centre and

(b) the European Forest Information System.

 

The IES is a multidisciplinary research institution with a strong expertise in environmental monitoring and modelling. Key to its role in supporting policy decision making, the IES holds a large capacity for the development of decision support tools and systems and is responsible for data harmonization and interoperability in the context of the INSPIRE directive.

 

The IES conduces mainly to on decision support systems for integrated forest management (WP 2) as well as to policy analysis and foresight for integrated forest management (WP 3). Furthermore, it has the lead on the establishment of case study areas and analysis tools (WP 2.1).
